Sweet or savoury, there are absolutely no rules when it comes to enjoying thick, soft and fluffy waffles. Drizzled in thick, syrupy honey, topped with decadent ice cream or drenched in gooey egg yolk with bacon on the side – who are we to dictate how this brunch favourite is enjoyed?

Here we have five of our favourite places for waffles, all gobbled without much fuss, worry or words in between mouthfuls. These outlets serve a variety of waffles, but we picked the offerings that truly tickled our fancy.

Every Sundae
Every Sundae

It’s called the Sweet Day (RM18), because any day you enjoy this waffle topped with salted caramel gelato, chunks of honeycomb and a generous drizzle of honey butterscotch sauce is a sweet one indeed.

Adding to the sweetness is the ring of cotton candy that creates the gorgeous illusion of the waffle cushioned on top of a fluffy, airy cloud. It is such a pity that we had to destroy this dreamy waffle for the sake of eating,

but someone has to do the dirty work. Each bite will get you floating on cloud nine in no time.

Frisky Goat Bakery Cafe

Monsieur Ben Wafels (RM18.90) is definitely a fantastic way to start the day right. Super soft waffles topped with poached eggs, streaky beef bacon and Hollandaise sauce will put a smile on your face right away. Not only does the plate of waffles look inviting, it tastes really yummy as well. The beef bacon isn’t too chewy – always a good thing – and they put just the right amount of sauce on top of the eggs, so the two square Belgian waffles don’t get soggy instantly. Of course, the biggest anticipation when it comes to poached eggs is to see the runny yolk oozing out of the centre on the first cut – and the Frisky Goat’s don’t disappoint.

Sitka

Sitka

A fried egg on waffles? On top of buttermilk fried chicken? Please make that two … although it would be hard to finish these babies in one sitting. Just one serving of Sitka’s Buttermilk Fried Chicken Waffle (RM28) is good enough to fill you up for many hours. But it’ll take even longer to forget the beautiful taste of the well-seasoned chicken that lingers on your tongue.

Slightly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, the chicken is fried to perfection – so good that you might wonder why they even bother adding the aioli and hot sauce to this creation. Well, the red-and-white combo does look pretty, with the ready-to-burst egg yolk on top…

Madame Waffle

Madame Waffle

For a quickie waffle fix, we say that Madame Waffle is the place to go.

The fuss-free kiosk serves a variety of yummilicious waffles, but our favourite has to be the Blueberry Cream Cheese (RM11) which gets our taste buds tingling with its sweet and sour combination. Served with fresh strawberries and blueberries, the single waffle square can be chomped in just a few huge bites.

Durian lovers can opt for the Musang Durian Cheesecake Waffle for that extra oomph.

If you’re up for a colourful challenge, then try the Rainbow Waffle with seven individually-coloured waffles, layers of cream cheese and a large scoop of vanilla gelato.

The Rainbow Waffles are only available at Madame Waffle outlets at Sunway Pyramid, Mid Valley & IOI City Putrajaya, while the rest can be found at all outlets.

E.T.A.L

E.T.A.L

If you’re a book lover, you will appreciate the humour in E.T.A.L’s quirky way of naming its waffles. They are named after popular authors and book characters – except for Yun Fatt, which we suspect is named after a famous HK actor. So you can get a Blyton (caramel), an Austen (white chocolate and vanilla), or a Steph Meyer – flavoured with butter, garlic and parsley. Our pick is the Rowling (RM6.50), generously sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, and which tastes just as magical as the author’s creations. We also gave the Murakami (RM10) – topped with bonito flakes, mayo and takoyaki – a try. Like the author’s work, it took a few good helpings to get used to. E.T.A.L uses pearl sugar to caramelise its Belgian Liege waffles, and yup, you can taste that sweet goodness in every bite.

Where: 5 Jalan Lengkongan Brunei, off Jalan Pudu, KL Tel: 018-215 9935

E.T.A.L. is under renovation and should open mid-August. Visit facebook.com/VvaffleMY for updates.
