One food, Different taste

Lim introduce the 4 Kings of Bali Gourmet

Kampar: Photography Society and Traveler's Den had just organized a sharing session titled “Bali Food Journey” in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. The talk was given by Lim Kim Cherng, an "eatellectual", a foodie expert, a blogger and a writer. This talk were held in A009, UTAR Heritage Hall on 26th August. Approximately 60 people participated in this talk.

In his speech, Lim incited the audiences by asking “How much knowledge you have about your food? Where does it come from, what is the history behind each and every food? Did all of you know that, one food can have many and different ways of cooking it? And does you know that same food served in different country will taste differently even though the name is the same?”

Food and eating, is a knowledge and part of science. Food does not appear suddenly out of nowhere. Each and every one of it has its own uniqueness and history.

However, the food that we had today might not be the same as food from long time ago. Food also goes through the process of evolution and changes in accordance to time and place as food also travel from places to places.

“In Bali, most of the food will taste a little bit salty. However, when I had the same food in Malaysia, the taste will be a little bit sweeter.”

This is the cultural differences. Although the origin of the food came from one particular place, but the taste will change according to a person or a place background.

The taste palate of a person has adjusted to the cultural background and the taste of local.

“When I write about a certain food and its deliciousness, some do not agree as they tasted it. Growth environment of each person is not the same and thus the taste of different place’s food might not be accepted by their palate”.

Lim’s food travelling focuses on delicacy that were hidden. It is not about big restaurant or five stars gourmet, but about food that circulates among the people, food that shows the history of the places and food that taste good.

Although the history and origin of every food cannot be confirmed with just research and investigations, but at least the knowledge is there.

Food travelling books that were written by Lim receive overwhelming response from the participants.
